ABU DHABI

GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM, UAE

TOURISM DEVELOPMENT INVESTMENT COMPANY (TDIC) (1.43 BILLION USD)

Description

The landmark structure housing the Guggenheim Museum Abu Dhabi was designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, who describes his composition as “intentionally ‘messy’, moving into clarity”. The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will have spectacular views of the Saadiyat Cultural District and the Arabian Gulf (https://youtu.be/gp3P_YWd4Xo).

Open to the elements, the Guggenheim’s cones recall the region’s ancient wind towers, which both ventilate and shade the Museum’s exterior courtyards in a blend of Arabian tradition and modern, sustainable design.

The Guggenheim Museum includes ten galleries, six restaurants, convention rooms, retail shops and marina facilities. The Museum has been designed to meet a LEED Gold rating.

Works on the Guggenheim site have commenced with installing the sea walls, 5,000 piles, and slab works. The main structure works will start in October 2013. The Guggenheim is estimated to cost 1.6 Billion USD and will be opened in early 2017.
